GLENDALE, CA – Disney Consumer Products revealed upcoming toys and games featuring the light saber-wielding heroine, Rey, from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, following fans’ outcry that the character was omitted from the first wave of toys and games tied to the film.
In response to the outcry for more Rey toys, Disney Consumer Products has revealed new products for Star Wars: The Force Awakens products that were previously kept under wraps prior to the film’s release. Now that the film now breaking box office records and storylines officially revealed, new toys, collectibles and more are rolling out at Disney Store locations and mass retailers nationwide, according to the company.
New toys include a Rey Lightsaber toy, updated Elite Series Die Cast action figures, a Kylo Ren unmasked action figure, a Deluxe Figure playset that includes 10 figures including General Leia, Han Solo, Rey, Kylo Ren and more. Also from Hasbro, fans can expect a 12-inch action figures featuring the characters Rey and Finn as FN-2187 (his stormtrooper moniker), 3.75-inch figures featuring new characters and scenes like Rey in her Resistance Outfit with her Lightsaber, Star Wars Nerf Rey and Han Solo blasters and a Bladebuilders Rey Electronic Lightsaber.
Additionally, Lego will release new construction sets, including a Resistance Troop Transporter (featuring a General Leia minifigure) as well as Star Wars buildable figures featuring heroes and villains from the film, such as Rey, Finn, Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma and more.
Beyond figures and play sets, Mattel will ship Hot Wheels diecast vehicles and ships, and there’s plush from Build-a-Bear, skateboards and outdoor play items, role play from Rubies, home décor (bedding, throws, posters), seasonal and party supplies, puzzles and much more on the way to store shelves.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens has made instant icons of new characters like Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren,” said Paul Southern, senior vice president, Star Wars licensing, Disney Consumer Products, in a statement. “We’re excited to share an incredible range of products that celebrates these fantastic new heroes and villains, allowing fans to take some movie magic home.”
Elissa Margolis, senior vice president, Disney Store, added “Rey is a true break out hero in the movie and is proving a huge hit with our guests. Demand for Rey merchandise was strong even before the movie released, with products selling as quickly as we could restock shelves, and it’s only growing with the success of the film.”
It didn’t take long for fans to realize that one of the key character, Rey, was ommitted from toys and games released by Hasbro tied to the recent Star Wars: The Force Awakens film. Fans quickly took to social media, prompting Hasbro to respond. Earlier this month, fans started writing letters and posting to social media asking Hasbro why it left out rey from its first wave of products. The Star Wars Monopoly game included four figures for moving around the board: Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Finn and Klyo Ren.Hasbro’s Millennium Falcon includes figures of Rey’s partner in crime Finn, the BB-8 droid and Chewbacca. Other figure packs include these characters in addition to stormtroopers, Klyo Ren, Poe Dameron and RIE fighter pilots.
Playthings reached out to the company said that the Star Wars: Monopoly set was released several months before the movie’s release, in September. The character of Rey was not originally included to avoid revealing a key plot line that she takes on Kylo Ren and joins the Rebel Alliance. Fans can expect to see Rey all over upcoming games and toys with the second wave of Star Wars products later this year.
“We love the passion fans have for Rey and are happy to announce that we will be making a running change to include her in the Monopoly: Star Wars game available later this year,” said Hasbro in a statement on Facebook.
The company added, “Rey is featured in the following Star Wars games: Hands Down, Guess Who and Chess’ as well as our 6-inch Black Series figures, 3 ¾-inch Figures and Vehicles, Black Series Titanium and Micromachines. Additionally, fans will see more Rey product hitting store shelves this month, including 6-inch and 12-inch Rey action figures. We are thrilled with the popularity of this compelling character and will continue to look for ways to showcase Rey across all of our product lines.”
The initial wave of Star Wars products product around Star Wars: The Force Awakens was officially launched on “Force Friday,” a global fan event on September 4, 2015, which saw more 130,000 fans turn up to one of 3,000 retail locations in the US that opened their doors at midnight. Highlights of the new line were revealed via a global unboxing event that unfolded over 18 hours, 15 cities and 12 countries. Kicking off in Sydney and rolling around the world New Year’s Eve style, the event saw popular Maker talent unveil new toys in different cities across four continents with the whole event streamed live on YouTube.
